Tour the Battleship USS North Carolina
When visiting Wilmington or the nearby towns, you will certainly want to take the time to visit the legendary Battleship USS North Carolina. This giant vessel stands proud reminding visitors of the efforts the U.S. took to remain a free country. You can board the ship and explore it, as well as feel the pride that oozes from every corner with patriotism. The tour of the ship is self-guided, which means you can explore at your own pace and spend more time in areas that interest you and less in others. Generally, you will need at least two to four hours to explore everything the ship has to offer.
Have fun at one of the local beaches
If you’re more a beach person, this warm and sunny city is positioned right in the center of many beaches that you can enjoy whenever you like. Within twenty minutes are Kure Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and Carolina Beach. If you’re up for a drive, there’s Topsail Island less than an hour away while Myrtle Beach is roughly 90 minutes south of downtown Wilmington. It usually doesn’t get too cold in the winter, and the summers are moderately hot. If it does get a little too warm for your liking, the inviting, cool ocean water is a perfect way to escape the heat. In the winter, you might even get a chance to see a snow-covered beach.
Wilmington city is famous for its many unique shops, so a trip to downtown is a must. One could easily spend hours browsing through items in the historic Cotton Exchange, a shopping complex that carries some of Wilmington’s top stores and specialty shops. This giant shopping center is situated in the heart of the city’s historic district.
Take a leisurely walk along Riverwalk
Of course, a trip to downtown isn’t complete without a stop to the Riverwalk. Stretched along Cape Fear River, this picturesque boardwalk is particularly nice in the evenings when the sunset creates a beautiful horizon along the river.
For hiking enthusiasts, Fort Fisher is located on the far southern end of the city and offers access to a state park with great hiking terrains. The city is also home to a large aquarium which is a great place for kids of all ages. Another great place to stop at is Arlie Gardens which features handmade glass exhibit done by a local artist and a butterfly conservatory. There also theaters, great restaurants and a long list of fun annual events all within the city. Wilmington, NC is truly an excellent community where you can relax and forget all your troubles.
